Why National Lasagna Day?
People ask us all the time why National Lasagna Day is such a big deal to Lasagna Love, and the answer always makes us smile because it isn’t really about lasagna. Well… it is, but probably not in the way you’re thinking.
To us, lasagna has always represented something much bigger than dinner. It’s one of those meals that naturally brings people together. It’s hearty enough to feed an entire family, somehow tastes even better the next day, and every single pan tells a story because no two people make it exactly the same. Every volunteer adds a little bit of themselves, choosing ingredients they love, preparing it with care, and making it exactly the way they would for someone sitting at their own kitchen table.
Around here, we like to call it a culinary hug.
When someone receives a lasagna through Lasagna Love, they’re receiving so much more than a homemade meal. They’re receiving the gift of someone’s time, someone’s thoughtfulness, and the quiet reassurance that they don’t have to carry everything on their own. It’s a reminder that even during life’s hardest seasons, there are still people who care enough to show up.
That’s why National Lasagna Day feels like it belongs here.
Not because we own the holiday, but because it gives all of us one incredible day to celebrate what happens quietly, every single day of the year. For six years, this movement has grown one neighbor at a time through ordinary people choosing to do something extraordinary. They shop, cook, bake, write encouraging notes, and deliver meals to people they’ve never met, asking for nothing in return except the hope that someone feels a little less alone.
We think that’s worth celebrating.
One of the things we love most about National Lasagna Day is that it falls right in the middle of summer. School is out, families have a little more room to breathe, and kids have the chance to roll up their sleeves, sprinkle the cheese, write a delivery note, or ride along to someone’s front door. It’s the perfect opportunity to teach the next generation that kindness isn’t complicated. Sometimes it looks like opening your kitchen, sharing what you have, and taking a little extra time to care for someone else.
We’ve also learned something beautiful over the years. Acts of kindness have a way of creating ripple effects that we may never fully see. A family who receives a meal today may become a volunteer months from now. A child who helps deliver a lasagna may grow up believing that serving their community is simply what neighbors do. One person says yes, and suddenly another person feels inspired to do the same.
That’s how Lasagna Love has always grown.
This year, National Lasagna Day is our invitation for everyone to be part of that story. Whether you’re preparing your very first lasagna, requesting a meal for your family, opening the door to make more deliveries possible, inviting your workplace to get involved, or simply sharing our mission with someone you know, you have a place at the table.
Throughout the month of July, our community is coming together with one shared goal: to impact 50,000 neighbors through homemade meals and acts of kindness. Every meal delivered, every volunteer who joins us, every family that finds a little relief, and every person who chooses to care for someone else brings us one step closer.
Because National Lasagna Day isn’t really about celebrating a recipe.
It’s about celebrating the incredible people who gather around the table, the doors that open because someone cared enough to knock, and the quiet moments that remind us the world is still full of good people.
A homemade meal changes more than dinner.
It reminds someone they matter.

A Story Shared by So Many
“I almost didn’t fill out the request form. I kept telling myself someone else probably needed it more than I did.”
“That week everything seemed to hit at once. My hours had been cut, my youngest was home sick, and after paying rent there wasn’t much left. I remember standing in front of the refrigerator wondering how I was going to make dinner stretch for another two days.”
“When I opened the door and saw someone standing there with a homemade lasagna, I cried. Not because of the meal—but because someone I had never met had taken the time to shop for me, cook for my family, and remind us that we mattered.”
“That night, for the first time in weeks, we sat around the table together without worrying about what tomorrow would bring. My kids laughed. We had leftovers for lunch the next day. And for just a little while, life didn’t feel so heavy.”
“People think Lasagna Love is about food. It is. But it’s also about hope. It’s about knowing your community sees you when you need it most.“
