Millie is a 9-year-old red fox Lab with the gentlest heart, despite everything she has survived. In October 2024, she was found wandering alone in Pennsylvania, sick and visibly swollen. The woman who rescued her thought she might be pregnant and contacted Country Acres Farm, but the vet discovered the heartbreaking truth: Millie had recently given birth and was suffering from a severe infection. She was nearly septic and only hours from dying. The vet suspected she had been used for breeding and abandoned when she became sick. After an emergency hysterectomy and strong IV antibiotics, Millie somehow pulled through.
We brought Millie home in November, and even though she was scared, she still trusted us. She leaned into cuddles, rolled over for belly rubs, and seemed to understand she was finally safe. But her medical struggles were far from over. Her teeth were worn tiny, likely from years of chewing on a cage, her joints were stiff, and her ears were badly infected. She started antibiotics, joint supplements, and steroids, but for months she barely left the couch.
At first, we thought she was simply resting after a lifetime of hardship. Then we learned her chronic ear infections had likely gone untreated for years, causing unimaginable pain. Still, Millie never cried, snapped, or complained—she only wagged her tail and asked for love. The vet told us there were only two options: a major surgery to remove her ear canals or letting her go.
Millie had already fought so hard, and we knew she deserved the chance to live without pain. She underwent a total ear canal ablation, and during the same surgery, the veterinary team also removed a cancerous lump from her abdomen. Her recovery was long and difficult, but Millie faced it with quiet strength, wanting only comfort, affection, and her people nearby.
Millie is deaf now, and she still has arthritis, but her spirit shines. With help from her dog brother, Milo, she has learned that life can be soft beds, full meals, safe nights, gentle hands, and unconditional love. After being failed so many times, Millie still chooses trust and joy. She reminds us every day that resilience can be quiet, healing can be slow, and even after the hardest life, there can still be love.
